Urbana Chapter, NSDAR, Urbana Ohio
Organized May 23, 1896
The Urbana Chapter, NSDAR, has been very active throughout its 125-plus years. The 125th anniversary was celebrated in October of 2021, after several delays due to the pandemic. The past 40 years have shown many "constants." They include: achieving highest DAR honors (Gold/Level 1); contributing to the President General and State Regent's projects; providing support for the DAR Schools and magazine; donating genealogical records and library books; assisting veterans with visits, letters, and gifts; publicizing chapter activities; promoting community patriotic events, including Constitution Week and Bell Ringing Ceremonies; supporting the Christian Waldschmidt Homestead; sponsoring the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) Cuttahotha Society; and attending local meetings, Southwest District meetings, Ohio State Society (Ohio DAR) Conferences, and the NSDAR Continental Congress.
In 2018, Wreaths Across America became an important part of chapter and community activity, with the chapter adopting Oak Dale Cemetery in Urbana, Ohio. Almost 1,800 known veterans are buried in Oak Dale. The chapter works to promote Wreaths Across America throughout the area, and covered the cemetery the first time in 2021. To learn more about this effort or to sponsor a wreath, click here or email our Regent.
Our meetings always include programs provided by Ohio DAR officers and chairs, or local speakers who adhere to the themes of historical, educational, or patriotic interest. The Urbana Chapter, NSDAR, has four committed dates each year: September - Constitution Week; December - Christmas Luncheon; February - President's Day and recognition of student award winners; June - Flag Day. Our common activities include chapter scrapbooks, grave marking ceremonies, committee participation and reporting, maintaining chapter records, and engaging in many chapter and local projects. Our individual members serve the community with many volunteer service hours and provide major leadership in various groups across the county and state.
Chapter members have served as committee chairs and state officers for the Ohio State Society DAR, and as committee vice chairs for the National Society.

The chapter has been recognized at the state and national levels for nominating persons to receive DAR Conservation, Americanism, and Historic Preservation Awards; Community Service Awards; and for the Medal of Honor. In addition, we have placed several DAR markers on Revolutionary War participants' grave sites. We have received many citations of our work related to various DAR goals. We have sponsored three Wings of Eagles Scholarship winners, and nine Ohio DAR history essay winners - two of whom were recognized as NSDAR winners. One local teacher received the "History Teacher of the Year" Ohio DAR Award.
In the last few years, the chapter has been participating locally in the Simon Kenton Hoopla Parade and Chili Festival, and in the Champaign County Historical Society Oktoberfest activities. Trophies for the Champaign County Junior Fair, judging at the county 4-H level, supporting Eagle Scout projects, and supporting local veterans organizations are just a few of the ways the chapter reaches out to the community.
We are proud of our history of honors, celebrations, and hard work, as we volunteer for various patriotic projects. We are grateful for our devoted members and leadership as we move ahead to a future of service and love of country.

Chapter Regent's Gavel
The chapter regent's gavel, pictured on the right, was presented to the chapter in October 1899, by charter member Mary Jordan. The wood was taken from Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry's Flagship Lawrence after the ship was wrecked. It was fashioned into a cane used by Mrs. Jordan's father, before becoming our chapter's gavel. The photo at the left is a picture of the reproduction of the Flagship Niagara, the sister ship of the Lawrence. Admiral Perry transferred his command to the Niagara when the Lawrence was lost at the Battle of Put-in-Bay, during the War of 1812.
